The Arrow and the Song by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was an influential American poet, translator and professor at Harvard University.  He was heavily influenced by romanticism and made a name as a poet and novelist with works like Hyperion, Evangeline,Poems on Slavery and The Song of Hiawatha. During his life time, Longfellow was considered the best of all American poets, and his work was widely translated and published in other European languages.

   I shot an arrow into the air,

   It fell to earth, I knew not where;

   For, so swiftly it flew, the sight

   Could not follow it  in its  flight.

   I breathed a song into the air,

   It fell to earth, I knew not where;

   For who has sight so keen and strong

   That  it  can  follow the flight of a song?

   Long, long afterward, in an oak

   I found the arrow still unbroke;

   And the song, from beginning to end,

   I found again in the heart of a friend.

George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron            (22 January 1788 – 19 April 1824) was a English peer and poet. He was christened George Gordon Byron, but  he is commonly known simply as Lord Byron.
Lord Byron was a leading figure in the Romantic movement. 
Among Byron's best-known works are the lengthy narrative poems Don Juan and Childe Harold's Pilgrimage  and the short lyric She Walks in Beauty. He is regarded as one of the greatest British poets and remains widely read and influential.

Thomas Moore (28 May 1779 – 25 February 1852) was an Irish poet, singer, songwriter, and entertainer, now best remembered for the lyrics. 
Moore wrote 130 original poems set to folk melodies, including "The Minstrel Boy" and "The Last Rose of Summer." His poem "Lalla Rookh" is credited as the most translated poem of its time.

Шекспир - 400 лет спустя

23 апреля  мир отмечает 400 лет со дня смерти Уильяма Шекспира.





Национальный поэт Англии Уильям Шекспир зачастую считается величайшим англоязычным писателем и одним из лучших драматургов мира. 

Дошедшие до нас работы, включая некоторые, написанные совместно с другими авторами, состоят из 38 пьес, а также 154 сонетов, 4 поэм и несколько эпитафий.

Считается, что своими пьесами Шекспир ввёл в обиход более двух тысяч слов, то есть даже не зная произведений Великого Барда, человек буквально каждый день использует изобретенные слова и выражения.

Это, например, восклицания"ради всего святого!", оборот "скатертью дорога", слова excellent («великолепный») и critical («критический»). Возможно, его же перу принадлежит слово murder («убийство»). 

Не всегда очевидно, существовало ли то или иное выражение до Шекспира, но именно в его пьесах многие из них впервые зафиксированы.

St George's Day in England remembers St George, England's patron saint.

                                                                                 The anniversary of his death, which is on April 23, is seen as England's national day. According to legend, he was a soldier in the Roman army who killed a dragon and saved a princess.

April 23 marks the anniversary of the birth or death of a range of well-known writers, including Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Maurice Druon, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Haldor Kiljan Laxness, Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and William Shakespeare. 

For this reason, UNESCO's General Conference chose this date to pay tribute to books, the authors who wrote them, and the copyright laws that protect them.

National Shakespeare Day 

William Shakespeare turned 451 on 23rd April 2015. This Bard of Avon has been referred to as a “literary genius” and “Britain’s greatest playwright and poet”. His work includes comedies, such as The Taming of the Shrew and a Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as tragedies such as King Lear, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. Much of his work has been seen in modern-day theatre, the ballet and in modern films. His plays have been translated in about 80 different languages across the world.

According to the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, Shakespeare wrote close to a tenth of the most quoted lines ever written or spoken in English.

Shakespeare has been credited by the Oxford English Dictionary with introducing almost 3,000 words to the English language. 

Estimations of his vocabulary range from 17,000 to 29,000 - at least double the average human.

What’s more, according to the Literary Encyclopaedia, Shakespeare is the second most quoted English writer after the writers of the Bible.
